Die NIKIN-Gründer Nicholas und Robin

Nicholas Hänny (l.) and Robin Gnehm (r.) founded NIKIN in 2016.

The two NIKIN founders Robin Gnehm and Nicholas Hänny literally know each other from childhood. Nicholas is Robin's father's godson. And conversely, Jeffrey, Robin's brother, is Nicholas' father's godson. Sounds complicated, but in summary it means: Robin and Nicholas have known each other since childhood. At the time, no one suspected that they would start a successful company together and it is the combination of many happy coincidences.

Robin und Nicholas als Kinder

Young and already fond of being in nature: the two NIKIN founders play together in the snow.

The wonderful NIKIN story began in 2016. Robin was traveling through the forests of Canada and is thrilled by the tree-rich landscape. When he returns, he meets up with his old friend Nicholas. Over a beer in the “McArthurs” pub in Lenzburg, the two not only discuss Robin's travel experiences.

McArthurs in Lenzburg

The idea for NIKIN came about on a cozy evening at “McArthurs” in Lenzburg.

The two scouts care about nature and decide to do something about reforestation. At this point, Nicholas had already designed his own small gym bag collection. Friends and family bought a few copies from him. One thing leads to another and Robin and Nicholas decide to produce their own hats and plant a tree for every hat sold. No sooner said than done - just a little later the two of them sold the first NIKIN hats, now called Treeanies.

60 Treeanies order the two in a first step. To their great surprise, they were completely sold out after three days.

Whatsapp-Konversation zu Treeanies

Robin and Nicholas discussed via Whatsapp (in Swiss German) how many Treeanies they should reorder.

The two of them stored their goods in Robin's brother Jeffrey's children's room. From there, the two of them soon sent their Treeanies not only to friends and acquaintances, but all over Switzerland.

You can read how Robin got his whole family involved and how NIKIN kept an entire post office alive in the second part of the blog series.
