Spring is approaching and is attracting people back into the fresh air to recharge their batteries with sunshine and energy. Do you also go jogging regularly? Then combine physical cleansing with cleaning your environment – plogging instead of just jogging!

Plogging

Have you logged today? Not? Then it's time. It is now well known that running is healthy. Enthusiastic joggers have now found a way to use their hobby to do something for the environment at the same time. The new trend from Scandinavia combines jogging with “plocka”, or “picking” in German.

What is plogging anyway?

Everything that doesn't belong in the environment is quickly picked, or rather collected. When plogging, groups of environmentally conscious runners swarm out, equipped with gloves and garbage bags, and clean parks, forests and even urban environments from garbage along their running routes. It is then disposed of in the appropriate waste containers and recycled.

Is this even sport?! Of course!

Running through the forest with a garbage bag takes some getting used to at first, but it has many advantages. The activity is physically demanding and less one-sided than just jogging. In addition, attention is being raised to the condition of local recreation areas and green spaces. Instead of just rushing by, plogging allows you to notice where action is needed. The darting garbage collectors are not only effective, especially in groups, but also very fast - and they attract attention.

Plogging encourages participation

Especially where plogging is still a new phenomenon, some people stop, wonder - and perhaps join in. Because where groups set a good role model, imitators quickly follow. So a win-win. Plogging is therefore enjoying increasing popularity as a combination of sport, environmental commitment and social activity in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Plogging

Use social media – for the environment

The movement owes this primarily to the fact that there is even a special app for it: with “Lifesum” ploggers can share their successes in before and after views. This not only trains new muscle groups, but also raises awareness of how much action is needed here. For many ploggers it is only a small step from waste disposal to waste prevention.

Sweden is also making progress here. Several hundred plogging events have already taken place across the country, and enthusiastic imitators can be found worldwide. Plogging is not only happening in Europe, but also in Costa Rica, Thailand and African countries.

NIKIN thinks plogging is cool

Although we at NIKIN are primarily concerned with sustainable materials in the fashion industry and fight against global deforestation, it is important to think sustainably in other areas of life too. We want to motivate people to rethink their lifestyle and possibly make it more sustainable. Plogging is a recent phenomenon from Sweden in which joggers collect litter during their runs. A sporting activity that benefits people and the environment. And when will you be there?
