Earth Day 2019 - NIKIN joins in!
As since 1990, the international Earth Day 2019 takes place every year on April 22nd. "Earth Day" is about strengthening appreciation for the natural environment, but also about encouraging people to rethink their own consumption habits.
This year, together with our partner, OneTreePlanted, and many volunteers, we plant about 5000 trees in the US state of Colorado! We are very happy to be there and to give something back to the earth.
We'll keep you up to date with this blog and report daily on what we're experiencing during our time in Colorado. Follow us on Social Media, where we regularly share impressions with you. (Instagram: @nikinclothing , Facebook: @nikinclothing)
Day 1: 17 April 2019
06.40 a.m. Meeting point at Zurich Airport. Without major difficulties we reach the city of Denver about thirteen hours later, in the centrally located US state of Colorado. Matt Hill and his crew from OneTreePlanted, with whom we will plant several thousand trees at the foot of the Rocky Mountains on #EarthDay2019, welcome us at the hotel. After a cheerful dinner in a local brewery we soon get some sleep and recharge our batteries after a long day. We are looking forward to what awaits us in the coming days!
Day 2: 18 April 2019
Relaxed and refreshed, we head to Denver's downtown area to meet Matt Hill, the founder of OneTreePlanted and his entire crew, and discuss past and future projects. As in our case, Matt's team has grown a lot over the past year. And more than 1.5 million trees have been planted worldwide!
Afterwards we use the free afternoon and get lost in the streets of the 700'000 metropolis in the heart of the United States. Wonderful spring weather draws people outside - so it is not surprising that the "Coors Field", the home of the local baseball team, the "Denver Rockies", is very well occupied. A new experience for most of us, a great experience that even ends with the home team winning. Tomorrow we're off to the place where we'll plant about five thousand trees on April 20th, together with OneTreePlanted and many other volunteers.
Day 3: 19 April 2019
At 7.30 a.m. we arrive after a half hour drive at the tree planting site on a gigantic area in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Today's barren and rocky area was not always so lifeless. About nine years ago, a forest fire, which was ignited for ecological reasons, degenerated, which completely destroyed a large forest and finally left thousands of burnt tree trunks behind. After a few years of recovery, the time has come to breathe new life back into this dead area with fresh seedlings.
After visiting the tree planting site we drive through the seemingly endless expanses along the Rocky Mountains to the place where the soon abandoned seedlings have grown from a small shoot to a strong young tree - the Colorado State Forest Nursery. Zach, who is actually a learned cook, now runs the tree nursery, which grows several million seedlings annually and supplies them to tree planting projects across the USA. He guides us through the greenhouses, explains how the seeds are planted correctly and how nature is imitated as best as possible - so that as many strong seedlings as possible grow in as short a time as possible, which can then be handed over to nature.
In the afternoon we visit the local "New Belgium" brewery and enjoy cosy hours in summer temperatures, during which we get to know our friends from OneTreePlanted better.
Day 4: 20 April 2019
With the sunrise we set off to the already explored tree planting site above the town of Boulder, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. The preparations are soon completed and the first volunteer tree planters arrive punctually at 10 am. About 400 volunteers are expected, from young to old, various partner organizations of OneTreePlanted but also many locals who have found their way to the tree planting site. Some of them are not planting trees for the first time - someone says he has planted over 100,000 trees in his life.
Around 5000 trees are planted today - in ten years a forest will have grown there again. But first the young "Ponderosa Pines" have to be carefully planted into the previously dug hole. Trees are planted under the brooding sun for five hours. Tree experts have marked some of the seedlings with a chip and can thus return in one, two and five years and see how the planted trees grow in their new environment. With the return of the forest, air, soil and water quality automatically improve and provide new habitats for rare wildlife such as the "Cougar" cat. Of the 5000 trees, some have certainly been sponsored by our customers by buying our products.
Cool and motivated people, beautiful weather and a common goal make the Tree Planting Event a complete success and an unforgettable experience. It's just good to give something back to nature and to have so much fun at the same time!
Day 5: 21 April 2019
Our journey to OneTreePlanted is slowly coming to an end. We totally enjoyed the great time with OneTreePlanted and are sure that these days have strengthened the bond to our tree planting partner even more. Many personal conversations and the mutual exchange give us a good feeling for the further cooperation with OneTreePlanted. We are looking forward to many more joint projects with OneTreePlanted! THANK YOU GUYS!
