Global Organic Textile Standard, GOTS for short, is an internationally recognised certification with the vision that organic textiles should become an essential part of everyday life, improving people's lives and benefiting the environment. Since 2019, NIKIN is also GOTS certified, but what is GOTS?
NIKIN aims to bring sustainable and fair products to people at affordable prices. Of course, this was not possible from day one (end of 2016) – because fair and sustainable production simply costs more in production than a cheap product manufactured in Asia. To constantly improve ourselves and to become even more sustainable and fair was important to us from the beginning.
Meanwhile we produce almost exclusively in Europe – our textiles come from European Turkey. Our producer is certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) – which ensures a fair and sustainable production.
In January we also had GOTS inspect us – after a very precise inspection we received our certification with success and much praise. We have been GOTS certified since 2019, which makes us very proud and brings us even closer to our goals.
So we are GOTS certified now, but what is GOTS?
The abbreviation GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard. The internationally recognized standard stands for organically produced fabrics and was introduced in 2006. In the meantime, the standard has made a name for itself worldwide and is increasingly being used in trade and industry, but also by customers as a quality standard. GOTS certification includes raw material sowing and harvesting as well as environmentally friendly production. This includes not only processing and manufacturing, but also packaging, labelling, trade and distribution of textiles containing natural fibres – and 70% of these fibres must be ecologically certified or certifiable. These are not only garments, but also yarns and fabrics or home textiles. In addition to environmental compatibility, ethically and socially compatible production and processing is an important component of GOTS certification.
What is GOTS committed to?
GOTS was created to make the ecological, health and social quality of natural textiles measurable and is an internationally recognised standard. What is special about GOTS – the entire production chain is included in this certification. Since all phases of production are really checked, the requirements are high. Only in this way can it be guaranteed that the production process is completely sustainable in accordance with the specifications.
Moreover, the demands are raised by the fact that the social standards are high. The renunciation of child labour, reasonable wages that secure livelihoods and protective measures at the workplace are also being reviewed.
What are the requirements for certification?
Certification according to the GOTS standard starts from zero. Let's take the example of cotton –cotton is the raw material for half of the world's garments. GOTS certification begins with the ginning of the cotton. To be acceptable, the cotton must be organically grown in accordance with agricultural standards, such as the EU Organic Regulation. An on-site inspection includes the inspection of the entire processing and also of the trade chain – all, really all companies involved up to the issue to the end customer are inspected annually and on site in order to receive and retain the GOTS seal.
Why is it worth getting certified?
The advantage for retailers: Once you have received the GOTS seal, you can advertise with it, but strictly limited to the products that actually deserve it. Other items may also be offered, but the distinction from GOTS-certified products must be clear and obvious.
For the retailer, certification is a quality feature. Customers are assured that they can buy sustainably manufactured products with a seal of quality. This makes producers and retailers who decide to take this step the first port of call for customers who value the verifiable sustainability of their goods.
The standard, in turn, provides the customer with a selection criterion for purchasing. The certified companies can be viewed in the publicly accessible GOTS database!
